FTIR spectroscopic imaging, has emerged as a powerful tool for characterisation of polymeric, pharmaceutical and biomedical systems. This talk will outline the research we are developing in this area with focus on FTIR spectroscopic imaging in both ATR (Attenuated Total Reflection) and transmission modes. Emerging biomedical applications of these methods will be discussed. Chemical visualisation with enhanced spatial resolution in micro ATR imaging mode broadens the range of biomedical samples (cross-sections of blood vessels or hair, prostate tissue, colon biopsies, single cells, etc.) amenable to study with FTIR imaging, which were previously ruled out by the inadequate spatial resolution.

Medical imaging is an essential tool in diagnosis and, increasingly, in therapy. Recent advances in both the acquisition of images and their analyses, using tools from machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), have already produced earlier detection of disease and better surgical interventions. This seminar reviews those advances and discusses applications in cardiac treatment, detection and staging of prostate, kidney, and breast cancer, and monitoring of therapy. We also discuss the issues concerning the generalizability and explainability of a number of current AI methods and the impact on acceptance by clinicians.

With the increasing competence to visualize fluorophores and markers, molecular imaging empowers new capabilities for exploring a wide variety biological processes and functions. This seminar will showcase multiple recent applications of molecular imaging for high-resolution and real-time observation in neurobiology and brain studies. Examples of multiscale optical and hybrid sensing and imaging are discussed for visualizing healthy and diseased brains. Outstanding challenges in the field are considered in the context of current and future applications of molecular imaging for basic and translational research.

Dr. Abagyan’s research focuses on the development of novel technologies for structure based drug discovery and optimization, structural systems biology for target finding and protein modeling. The lab screens specific biomedical targets to discover new drug leads, and validate them experimentally

Global BioImaging together with African BioImaging Consortium (ABIC), Africa Microscopy Initiative (AMI), Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF), Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (Bio-RTC) based in Yobe, Nigeria, Biomedical Imaging Organization for South East Europe (BIO-SEE), the Consortium for Advancement of MRI Education & Research in Africa (CAMERA), Euro-BioImaging ERIC and Latin America BioImaging (LABI) have partnered to organize a 2-week workshop called Molecules to Man (M2M) aimed at bridging microscopy and biomedical imaging communities together.

Conical diffraction is a well-known optical phenomenon that has only recently drawn the attention of the microscopy community for its beam-shaping potential. It occurs when polarized light aligned into a biaxial crystal spreads to form a hollow cone within the crystal and emerges with cylindrical light patterns that can be shaped and scanned with features sharper than the diffraction-limit. Here, we present the conical diffraction phenomenon and some of its most useful properties for microscopy. We then show how it can be deployed and integrated into super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and its applications.

Quantitative Phase Imaging (QPI) is a novel label-free microscopy technique bringing a completely new contrast into the live-cell imaging field. It allows extracting of information-rich quantitative data from unlabeled cells and monitoring their dry mass in non-invasive experiments. This seminar will explain the principle of technology and present broad range of applications focusing on the label-free analysis of cell growth, cell death, cell migration etc. Apart from cell biology research, studies of biomolecular condensates and biomaterials will be discussed.

Optogenetics uses light-sensitive proteins of non-mammalian origin to enable imaging and control of biological processes with unprecedented precision in space and time. The genetic specificity and the non-contact nature of the method has led to an explosion of applications – from basic science to the clinic. In this seminar, the basic optogenetics methodology will be introduced and key developments and applications will be discussed, covering utility in neuroscience, vision, heart and plants.

Super-resolution fluorescence imaging uses several technological advances to improve the spatial resolution of optical microscopy and visualize cellular structures that have been off-limits for conventional diffraction-limited microscopy. This seminar will go over a few super-resolution techniques, including STED and STORM, explain their principles, and discuss how these powerful approaches provide unprecedented insights into cellular structures and functions.

Over the past decade, the imaging technology for micro and nanoscale research has increased in complexity, sensitivity and mobility to allow capturing data well beyond a single field of view. These trend in instrument design allowed the researchers to integrate in single image set, both tissue context information and high-resolution, which enhanced our abilities to more reliably test research hypotheses. This talk will focus on how modern imaging approaches enhanced our understanding of the neuropathology present an mouse model of DiGeorge syndrome (22q11.DS)

Cardiac optical imaging is a powerful tool for studying cardiac electrophysiology and intracellular calcium handling under normal and pathological conditions, or in response to environmental toxins. This seminar will explain technical approaches to optical imaging in cardiac cell preparations and tissue constructs. Applications for cardiotoxicity testing will be discussed.

CLARITY Tissue Clearing approach is an optical clearing technique used to achieve deep tissue imaging in 3-dimensions (3D). The ability to image complete intact anatomical structures is providing tremendous insight into the structural organization of tissues in health and disease. In this seminar we will explore several optical clearing techniques, followed with discussion of prosand-cons and possible applications in different fields of science.
